Ingredient and Substitutions
- Vegetable Base – Better than Bouillon Vegetable Base is a small jar of powerful flavor. It’s a much healthier version of bouillon cubes and is certified vegan. “No Chicken Base” or “No Beef Base” are really delicious here as well. You can find this at most grocery stores near the gravy section.
- Vegan Butter – Unsalted vegan butter is used to make the base of the gravy. If your butter is salted, you’ll want to use less salt or omit it entirely when seasoning the gravy.
- Flour – I use all-purpose flour in this recipe, but you can substitute it with whole wheat or 1-to-1 gluten-free.
- Broth – Vegetable broth adds an extra amount of tasty flavor but water works as well!
- Spices – A pinch of salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning adds the final touch that makes this vegan gravy irresistible! Poultry seasoning is a combination of sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, and pepper.
Step-By-Step Instruction
Here are some quick visual steps. Find the full recipe with exact measurements on the recipe card below.
Melt the vegan butter over medium heat in a small saucepan.
Then, whisk in the flour, a little at a time. Continue to stir as this comes together into a smooth mixture.
Next, whisk in the vegetable broth a little bit at a time. Stir it for another minute as the lumps dissolve.
Add the Better than Bouillon Base, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir the gravy occasionally as it thickens for 2-3 minutes.
Enjoy your gravy immediately or save it in the refrigerator for later.
Notes
- The gravy will thicken as it cools. You can thin it out with a small amount of water or broth if it becomes too thick.
- If you want a thicker consistency, mix some 1 tbsp cornstarch with 3 tbsp water in a small bowl until it’s lump-free. Then, add it to the gravy to thicken it up.
This vegan brown gravy can be made ahead of time! Let it cool down after you make it. Then, store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 5 days or in the freezer for 3 months. Reheat it in the microwave or in a small saucepan over the stovetop. Be sure to give it a good stir when reheating it.
