Honey mustard can absolutely be made vegan! All you need are a handful of ingredients and the flavor is spot on.
I love to whip up this easy dish to serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or pasta with a side of green veggies. This honey mustard tofu would also be so good in a salad or wrap.
To make it, simply press a block of tofu. Then slice and coat it in a simple sauce before baking the cubes into crispy perfection. Next, toss them in a homemade vegan honey mustard sauce and bake the tofu for just a couple of more minutes.

Note, this last step of baking the sauce into the crispy outer layer really makes such a delicious difference. Save the rest of the sauce for drizzling over your dish just before devouring it!

Ingredient Notes And Substitutions
See the full list of ingredients below in the recipe card with exact measurements.

- Tofu – Use a block of extra firm tofu. This will provide the best texture for this dish.
- Soy Sauce – A little soy sauce is used to flavor the tofu. You can swap it for a gluten-free alternative such as tamari or coconut aminos.
- Oil – This adds richness as well as helps the cornstarch and soy sauce cling to the tofu. Use any favorite oil such as olive or avocado.
- Cornstarch – I like to bake tofu in cornstarch for a crunchy outer layer. Another option here is a little baking powder instead.
- Agave – After so many trials, I found agave nectar to be the best alternative to honey because of its sweetness, hint of tang, and texture. If needed, you can use maple syrup or another liquid sweetener, but it will alter the final flavor.
- Mustard – Dijon mustard gives an elevated, yet not overpowering depth of tanginess.
- Seasoning – Just a little salt, pepper, and paprika are all that are needed for the best finishing touch here!

How To Make Tofu Honey Mustard
Here are some quick visual steps. Find the full recipe with exact measurements on the recipe card below.
Preheat the oven and line a large sheet pan. Drain the tofu block and press it for about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk together the soy sauce, olive oil, and cornstarch.
Slice the tofu into cubes and gently fold them into the soy sauce slurry.
Spread the tofu onto the sheet pan and bake it for 20 minutes.

As it bakes, combine the honey mustard ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Take the tofu out of the oven and gently toss it into the sauce.
Again, spread the tofu onto the sheet pan and bake it for just 5 minutes. (Save the remaining sauce for drizzling later.)

Serve the honey mustard tofu over mashed potatoes and green beans or any other favorites.
Drizzle remaining honey mustard sauce on top and enjoy!
Tips For Success
- When coating the tofu pieces, use a rubber spatula and stir gently to keep them from breaking apart into smaller pieces.
- Give the vegan honey mustard sauce time to sit so the flavors come together.

Recipe Variation Ideas
- Sprinkle in some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for a spicier bite.
- Enjoy the sauce over vegan chicken, soy curls, seitan, jackfruit, chickpeas, etc.
- Bake some vegetables alongside the tofu. Ideas include: bell peppers, broccoli, and onions.
Storage and Reheating
Store unfinished honey mustard tofu in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 4 days or the freezer for 3 months. Reheat it in the oven at 325°F (160°C) for 15 minutes or in an air fryer at 200°F (150°C) for 10 minutes. You can also reheat the tofu pieces in the microwave but they may lose some of their crispness.
