This Blue Smoothie Bowl is so creamy and irresistible! Frozen bananas, peaches, and pineapple are blended into a tropical medley. Maple syrup and vanilla give it a cozy warmth while blue spirulina naturally colors it a gorgeous blue. Such a healthy and refreshing treat!
I really believe that this easy blue smoothie bowl is sure to become a new favorite once you try it! It's full of delicious tropical flavors and has a beautiful bright blue color because of the added spirulina (also called blue majik).
This blue smoothie bowl couldn't be any easier. Just freeze fresh fruit and add them to a blender along with a few simple ingredients. Blend them up and enjoy!
It’s just like a classic smoothie but eaten with a spoon because it’s thicker. This recipe makes 2 medium/large bowls or 4 smaller portions. The final yield is about 4 cups.

This refreshing treat is similar to soft-serve ice cream, but it’s plant-based and full of fiber. It’s perfect for blue-themed parties, Percy Jackson movie nights, or Fourth of July celebrations.
I like to sprinkle in some nutritious spirulina powder just like with my Blue Chia Pudding recipe for that vibrant blue color, but you can certainly leave it out if you don't have any on-hand.
What Is Blue Spirulina?
Spirulina powder can be found at many grocery stores or ordered online. It's loaded with antioxidants, nutrients, minerals, and anti-inflammatory agents.
Spirulina is algae that has been ground up into powder. It naturally comes in either green or blue colors.
The one I use here has a deep blue color and is also called "blue majik." On its own, is has a slight ocean-like flavor, but once combined with the other flavors in this smoothie bowl, it becomes unnoticeable.
For other neat options, you can try swapping the spirulina with butterfly pea powder for a purple color. Or make it green with matcha powder. Yum!

Ingredients and Substitutions
- Bananas - Use ripe bananas for a creamy consistency.
- Peaches - I like to use white peaches but another variety can work as well. Select ripe, juicy ones if possible.
- Pineapple - Use fresh or canned pineapple chunks. If canned, be sure to drain them.
- Yogurt - Coconut yogurt is best here for a tropical flavor but other plant based options can work as well.
- Sweetener - Use maple syrup or another liquid sweetener such as agave.
- Spirulina - Just a little bit of blue spirulina powder is needed.
- Vanilla - Adds a depth of flavor to the smoothie.
- Toppings - Top it with coconut shreds, strawberries, and any other favorites.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here are some quick visual steps. Find the full recipe with exact measurements on the recipe card below.
Cube the fruit and place it in the freezer.
I like to place it on a lined baking sheet so that I can easily pop the pieces off once they're frozen. Or you can simply add them to a freezer bag or container if you prefer.
When the fruit is frozen (after about 2 hours) gather all of the ingredients, a blender, and your bowls. I like to use this Ninja blender, but any should work.
Take the fruit out and add it to the blender along with the maple syrup, vanilla, and blue spirulina.
Pulse it into a creamy mixture. Pause occasionally to scrape down the sides.
Quickly add it to your bowls, sprinkle some toppings over, and enjoy!
Tips
- Placing the fruit pieces on parchment paper makes them easier to pop off once frozen.
- You can add the fruit to freezer bags or containers if you don't plan to blend the smoothie bowl right away.
- Gather your ingredients beforehand to save time because the fruit starts to defrost and soften once it’s out of the freezer.
- Put your bowls in the freezer while blending the ingredients so that the smoothie stays cold longer while you’re eating it.
Variation Ideas
- Sprinkle in some protein powder.
- Change up the fruit for fun new flavors.
- Swap the blue spirulina for butterfly pea powder, green spirulina, or chocolate powder.
