Here are a few of my favorite vegan probiotic foods! They are all naturally found in plant-based foods and drinks rather than in supplements.

Dairy-based yogurt is usually what comes to mind when probiotics are mentioned, but there are actually many plant-based options. These sources mentioned below are common items and easily found at most grocery stores!

Why Probiotics?

I like to include probiotic-rich foods and drinks in my diet for a balance in my digestive system. These live microorganisms tend to help me feel better overall.

When shopping for these food and drinks or the ingredients needed to make them, be sure to look out for ingredients that might derive from animals. Examples include milk, honey, beef, chicken, and gelatin.

List Of Vegan Probiotic Foods And Drinks

Vegan Yogurt

I love to start my busy days with a big bowl of plant-based yogurt such as coconut yogurt made by So Delicious or almond yogurt made by Silk. Vegan yogurts have live cultures added to them and are light in sugar.

Of course, you can always add a drizzle of agave or maple syrup for a sweeter bite. Fresh fruit and granola also make delicious toppings.

Vegan yogurt is a handy ingredient to use when making Smoothie Bowls, Jackfruit Tikka Masala, layered into Chia Pudding, used in cakes such as my Vanilla Loaf Cake or my Apple Crumble Cake, and as a topping for Lentil Curry.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage that is full of addictive flavor. It is so delicious on top of vegan sandwiches, on avocado toast, salads, vegan hotdogs, or Beer Brats.

I usually see sauerkraut in jars in the condiments aisle or in pouches near the tofu section.

Kimchi

Similar to sauerkraut, kimchi is also fermented cabbage, but full of spiciness and flavor. It is commonly used in Asian-inspired dishes or as a side.

I like to add it to my rice bowls and salads. However, I will often find myself eating straight out of the pouch.

Please note that not all kimchis are vegan as some contain fish sauce. My current favorite vegan brand is made by Cleveland Kitchen. Be sure to try it alongside my Vegan Korean Fried Chicken!

Miso

I like to keep miso paste on hand for a simple miso soup with tofu and green onions. It can also be used for making sauces and marinades.

Add a few sprinkles of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick and be sure to heat it at a low temperature to prevent killing off the probiotic cultures.

Kombucha

This fermented tea tastes like a spiked juice or carbonated beverage. It’s irresistible once you add it to your routine. I like to drink kombucha once a week after my trip to the local Fresh Market.

Pickled Vegetables

The sky is the limit here with pickled veggies! They are loaded with probiotics and add a delicious bite to so many meals.

You can pickle vegetables on your own by placing them in a jar full of brine or buy them from the grocery store.

Pickled beets carrots and pickles.

My absolute favorite is pickled beets. Carrots, jalapeños, and pickles are pretty amazing as well.

Enjoy them on Sandwiches, Salads, Burgers, and more!

Sourdough Bread

A fermented starter has naturally occurring probiotics and is used to make sourdough bread. You can make your own or get if from your local bakery. Check the ingredients to make sure it’s vegan!

You can enjoy slices of sourdough bread with Tofu Scramble, Vegan Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches, Cucumber Sandwiches, Roasted Tomato Sandwiches, and Chickpea Patties!

In Conclusion

I hope this list of all my favorite vegan probiotic foods is helpful for you!

There are many other plant-based options, but these are a few of my favorite go-to items in my kitchen.

Happy eating and happy cooking!
